Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

My mother has been diagnosed with psychosis and gastritis. She refuses to go to the hospital or be transported by ambulance. She has also lost a significant amount of weight and is showing signs of anorexia. My mother is not willing to take any medication because she says she can't swallow pills and that there is a lot of saliva in her mouth, which makes her feel uncomfortable. What should I do in this situation?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

It sounds like your mother's situation is quite concerning, especially if she is having difficulty swallowing, as this can indicate a serious issue. I recommend requesting a home visit from a healthcare professional who can assess her general condition, including her pulse, blood pressure, and overall health. The doctor will then determine the next steps. If there is any immediate risk, the doctor may provide sedative medication to help manage her discomfort, making it easier for her to be transferred to a hospital for further treatment after conducting a capacity assessment. It's important to prioritize her safety and ensure she gets the necessary care.

Thanks
