Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I have a family history of heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes, but it is only on my mothers side. Is it possible for me to prevent these conditions in the future? I weigh 56 kg, have a height of 5.9, and maintain a regular walking routine with no history of high blood pressure. Can I prevent or overcome my positive family history of these diseases?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

A family history of blood pressure is not considered a risk factor unless it appears at a young age (usually before 35), which is often caused by abnormal anatomical issues related to the heart or blood vessels. If it appears later, it is mostly related to your mothers adopted lifestyle. Maintaining an ideal body weight, engaging in daily exercise, reducing salt intake, and avoiding smoking significantly decrease the chances of being diagnosed with blood pressure.

Thanks
