Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I have been experiencing persistent itching in a specific area on my back for many years, and I am concerned about the possibility of cancer. I have already consulted a dermatologist and undergone various blood and stool tests, as well as upper and lower endoscopies, but I have not received any satisfactory answers. Considering my mothers history of developing cancer (GIST) after experiencing a similar problem in the same location, I am worried about the potential of cancer elsewhere in my body.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

GIST is not a hereditary cancer condition. However, considering the similarity of symptoms between you and your mother, I recommend undergoing a CT scan with intravenous contrast of the abdomen and pelvis, as well as chest X-rays, to rule out GIST.

Thanks
