Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I've been experiencing a burning sensation in my urethra during urination. I've had several tests, including a urine examination, ultrasound (KUB and PVR), and renal function test, all of which came back normal. I also have GERD, which I've been treating with medication for the past five months. Could stomach acid reflux be causing the burning sensation?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. Based on your test results, it’s unlikely that stomach acid reflux is causing the burning sensation in your urethra. GERD typically affects the esophagus, and while it can lead to discomfort in the chest or throat, it does not generally cause urinary symptoms.

2. Since your lab results are normal, one possibility to consider is interstitial cystitis, a condition that can cause bladder pain and urinary urgency or discomfort. A cystoscopy, a procedure in which a small camera is inserted into the bladder, may be needed to examine the bladder lining and rule out this condition.

3. I recommend discussing this with your healthcare provider to explore this further and determine the best course of action.

Thanks
