Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I am 32 years old and have been taking the oral contraceptive pill Marvelon for 3 years to control severe period pain and PMS. But 3 weeks ago, I started experiencing severe palpitations and increased blood pressure (140/98) between attacks, along with normal BP between attacks and breathlessness episodes. I have undergone many tests, and all results are normal. I have visited 5 doctors, and everything appears normal. What should I do next? Should I stop taking Marvelon?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr.Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Based on your history, it seems that your premenstrual pain may be related to endometriosis, which can be treated to some extent. Additionally, taking oral contraceptive pills can lead to fluid retention in the body, potentially causing hypertension or increased blood pressure.

It would be beneficial for you to consult a gynecologist who specializes in endometriosis to assess your condition and discuss the possibility of laparoscopic clearance.

Regarding your hypertension, I recommend avoiding a salty diet and rechecking your blood pressure at least 3 consecutive days using the same device and in the same location. Take the average of these readings. If the home readings consistently exceed 140 systolic, it may be necessary to start a low dose of antihypertensives.

Other aspects to consider are chronic pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Thanks
