Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

What could be the reason for my 7-week-old baby vomiting a substantial amount after feeding? My baby experiences periods of vomiting, with 3-4 days passing without any incidents, followed by sudden episodes where she regurgitates seemingly the entire feeding and sometimes more. My fiance suggests that she might be eating too quickly while breastfeeding and recommends offering more bottle feeds. However, I do not believe that is the cause since it has also occurred during bottle feeds. In the last 24 hours alone, she has vomited three times while breastfeeding.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

It could be due to inadequate burping during and after feeds, as babies tend to swallow air while sucking. Bottle feeding is only beneficial if combined with breastfeeding; otherwise, formula feeding may not be helpful. Additionally, breastfeeding cannot lead to overfeeding, as babies instinctively know when to stop. At 6-7 weeks, infants presenting with vomiting should undergo screening for hypertrophic pyloric stenosis, a condition that typically emerges at this age. This is especially important if the baby is consuming sufficient feeds, experiencing vomiting followed by hunger, and exhibiting weight loss despite receiving appropriate nourishment.

Thanks
