Hello Doctor,
I have ADHD and my psychiatrist prescribed me Lexapro. Is that normal? He prescribed it to me on Friday and I took twenty milligrams that evening. The next morning I felt dizzy when I woke up. So I didn't take it the next day. But then I couldn't sleep well, and I thought it was because I stopped suddenly. I took it again on Sunday, and today is Monday. Should I take it? I don’t want to be dependent on it anymore.
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
I understand that you’re feeling confused and concerned about your recent prescription for Lexapro, especially given your diagnosis of ADHD. It's important to clarify that Lexapro is an antidepressant primarily used to treat anxiety and depression, and it is not typically prescribed for ADHD.
Your experience of dizziness after taking Lexapro is a common side effect, especially when starting a new medication or changing the dosage. It’s also possible that the discontinuation of the medication has led to sleep disturbances, which can happen when you stop or miss doses suddenly. It’s crucial to approach any changes in medication under the guidance of a healthcare professional.
While your psychiatrist may have prescribed Lexapro to help manage anxiety or depressive symptoms that can coexist with ADHD, it’s essential to evaluate how you’re feeling on the medication. Many individuals with ADHD experience overlapping symptoms of anxiety and depression, which can complicate the treatment process. However, it’s vital to ensure that the medication you’re taking aligns with your specific needs.
Given your concerns about dependence and the side effects you’re experiencing, I strongly recommend scheduling a follow-up appointment with your psychiatrist as soon as possible. This discussion can help clarify the rationale behind the prescription and allow you to express your concerns. Your psychiatrist may consider adjusting your treatment plan or exploring alternative medications that are more suitable for managing ADHD.
Remember, effective treatment is about finding the right balance that addresses all your symptoms while minimizing side effects. Please prioritize your mental health and seek support from a qualified healthcare professional.
Thanks
