How to Treat Zoster?

What is Zoster?

Zoster, commonly known as shingles, is a viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus. This virus also causes chickenpox. After recovering from chickenpox, the virus remains dormant in nerve cells and can reactivate years later, leading to shingles. While treatments exist to alleviate shingles symptoms, a definitive cure remains elusive. However, preventive measures include vaccines targeting both shingles and postherpetic neuralgia.

Why Does Zoster Occur?

  1. Virus Reactivation: The primary cause of zoster is the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, often decades after the initial chickenpox infection.
  2. Weakened Immune System: A weakened immune system due to aging, illness, or medications can increase the risk of zoster.
  3. Stress: High levels of stress may contribute to the reactivation of the virus.
