What is Elephantiasis?
Lymphatic filariasis, commonly referred to as Elephantiasis, is a debilitating condition caused by parasitic worms transmitted through mosquito bites. These worms obstruct the lymphatic system, leading to swelling and enlargement of body parts, typically the limbs and genitalia. Elephantiasis is endemic in tropical and subtropical regions, affecting millions of people worldwide.
Recognized as a neglected tropical disease (NTD), Elephantiasis exhibits a higher prevalence in tropical and subtropical regions globally, particularly in areas such as Africa and Southeast Asia. The disease's distinctive feature is the pronounced swelling in specific body parts, contributing to its recognition as a significant health concern in these geographical regions. This condition results in swelling, affecting areas such as the scrotum, legs, or breasts, and it is characterized by its chronic and progressive nature.
Why Does Elephantiasis Occur?
Elephantiasis is caused by the filarial parasites Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, and Brugia timori. These parasites are transmitted to humans through mosquito bites. Once inside the body, the parasites mature into adult worms, residing in the lymphatic vessels, where they can cause extensive damage over time.
