How to Treat Watering Eyes?

What Causes Watering Eyes?

Watering eyes, known medically as epiphora, can be caused by a variety of factors. It's important to understand the underlying causes in order to determine the most effective treatment.

Common Causes of Watering Eyes:

  1. Allergies: Allergens in the environment, such as pollen or pet dander, can trigger excessive tearing in individuals who are allergic to them.
  2. Blocked Tear Ducts: When the tear ducts that drain tears from the eye to the nose are partially or completely blocked, tears may overflow onto the face.
  3. Dry Eyes: Paradoxically, dry eyes can also cause excessive tearing. When the eyes are too dry, they become irritated, leading to an overproduction of tears.
  4. Conjunctivitis: Also known as pink eye, this eye infection can cause redness, discharge, and excessive tearing.
  5. Foreign Objects: When a foreign object, such as dust or an eyelash, gets into the eye, it can stimulate tearing as a protective mechanism.

Why Should You Address Watering Eyes?

Excessive tearing can be bothersome and interfere with daily activities. It may blur your vision, make your eyelids and skin around the eyes sore, and lead to social discomfort. Determining the cause of your watering eyes is the first step in finding relief and improving your quality of life.
