What are Mouth Ulcers?
Mouth ulcers, commonly referred to as canker sores, are small, painful lesions that can develop inside the mouth. These shallow sores may appear on the tongue, gums, inner cheeks, or lips. While not contagious, they can cause discomfort and disrupt eating and speaking. These tiny sores, arising on the gums, lips, tongue, inner cheeks, or the roof of the mouth, stem from diverse factors, ranging from minor injuries to hormonal shifts and emotional stress.
Why Do Mouth Ulcers Occur?
- Trauma or Injury: Accidental biting, aggressive brushing, or injury from dental devices can lead to the development of mouth ulcers.
- Stress and Hormonal Changes: Stress and hormonal fluctuations, especially in women during menstruation, can contribute to the occurrence of mouth ulcers.
- Nutritional Deficiencies: Insufficient intake of certain vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin B12, iron, or folate, may increase the risk of developing mouth ulcers.
- Immune System Disorders: Conditions that affect the immune system, such as autoimmune diseases, can make individuals more susceptible to mouth ulcers.
