How to Treat Hyperthyroidism?

What is Hyperthyroidism?

Hyperthyroidism, a medical condition marked by the thyroid gland's excessive activity, is a vital organ responsible for producing hormones essential in regulating metabolism. Positioned in the neck and resembling a butterfly, this gland plays a pivotal role in sustaining the body's energy balance. When this gland becomes overactive, an abundance of thyroid hormones—thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3)—is released, triggering a cascade of physiological effects.

This health condition involves the excess production and release of thyroid hormones, commonly known as an overactive thyroid, with triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) being the primary hormones orchestrating crucial roles in metabolism and various bodily functions.

Why Does Hyperthyroidism Occur?

Graves' disease stands out as the leading cause of hyperthyroidism. This autoimmune disorder occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland, stimulating it to produce more hormones than the body requires. Apart from Graves' disease, hyperthyroidism can result from thyroid nodules—abnormal growths or lumps on the thyroid—and thyroiditis—inflammation of the thyroid gland, causing a temporary surge in hormone release.
