What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma, a collective term for various eye conditions, inflicts damage upon the optic nerve, a crucial bundle of nerve fibers linking the eye to the brain. The impairment often stems from elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), an abnormally high pressure within the eye. The optic nerve's pivotal role in transmitting visual information from the retina to the brain underscores the severity of damage it can sustain, potentially resulting in enduring vision loss. Termed the "silent thief of sight," glaucoma's insidious progression is marked by its slow advancement, often lacking noticeable symptoms until significant vision impairment emerges.

This spectrum of eye disorders encompasses the leading cause of optic nerve damage, contributing to compromised vision. The typical scenario involves fluid accumulation in the front part of the eye, creating surplus pressure that gradually erodes the optic nerve. Recognized as intraocular pressure (IOP) or eye pressure, this condition persists, even in individuals with ostensibly normal eye pressure. Without timely intervention or effective management, glaucoma poses the risk of irreversible vision loss, ultimately culminating in blindness.

Why is Glaucoma a Concern?

The primary concern with glaucoma is the potential for irreversible vision loss. Unlike some other eye conditions, glaucoma typically develops gradually and without obvious warning signs. By the time individuals notice changes in their vision, the damage to the optic nerve may already be significant. How Does Glaucoma Develop?

Trabeculectomy is a common surgical procedure that involves creating a new drainage channel for the aqueous humor to reduce intraocular pressure. Another surgical option is the implantation of drainage devices to facilitate fluid drainage.
  4. Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS): MIGS has emerged as a less invasive option for managing glaucoma. These procedures aim to improve the outflow of aqueous humor through the natural drainage pathways, often with fewer complications and a faster recovery compared to traditional surgeries.
