What is Dry Lips?
Dry lips, commonly known as chapped lips, afflict individuals of all ages, causing discomfort and pain. This condition manifests when the lips lose moisture, resulting in dryness, cracks, and occasional swelling. The thin and oil gland-deficient nature of the delicate lip skin makes it particularly prone to dryness, necessitating prompt attention.
Due to the absence of oil glands, the skin covering your lips is thinner and more fragile than the skin on the rest of your body. Consequently, your lips are vulnerable to dryness and chapping, exacerbated by frequent exposure to the elements, especially during prolonged periods of sun exposure or exposure to dry and cold weather conditions.
Why dry lips occur?
Several factors contribute to the development of dry lips. Environmental elements, such as cold or dry weather, can strip the lips of their natural moisture. Exposure to wind and harsh sunlight can further exacerbate the problem. Dehydration is another common culprit, as inadequate water intake can lead to overall skin dryness, including the lips. Habits like licking the lips, although providing temporary relief, can worsen the condition, as saliva evaporates quickly, leaving the lips even drier.
