How to Treat Pertussis?

Medical Treatment:
  • Whooping cough treatment depends on age and how long have had the infection
  • 6 months older baby who is very ill and the people with severe symptoms usually be treated in a hospital
  • Antibiotics may be prescribed to be taken at home for people who are diagnosed during the first three weeks of infection (it does not reduce symptoms, but helps to stop the infection spreading to others)
  • People have had whooping cough for more than three weeks will not normally need any specific treatment because they are no longer contagious and antibiotics are unlikely to help
Do the following things to help while you are recovering at home by yourself:
  • Drink lots of fluids
  • Take painkillers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol (for a fever)
  • Take plenty of rest
  • Clean away mucus and sick from your or your kid mouth
  • Do not use cough medicines because they are not suitable for young children
