How to Treat Otitis Externa Necrotising?

Things to note:
  • Debridement as indicated.
  • Insert a dry wick such as a dried sponge, into the canal under direct vision.
  • Remove the wick 2 days later,and replace if necessary.

Medical treatment:
  • Ciprofloxacin, oral, 500 mg 12 hourly for 4-6 weeks.

When to refer:
  • For surgical debridement of necrotic bone in non-responders.
  • All cases to a centre where CT scan of the affected area can be done to assessthe extent of the disease.
  • Cranial nerve palsies.

Things to note:
Debridement as shown.
Place a dry wick like a dried sponge under direct vision in the canal.
Two days later remove the wick and replace it if necessary.

Medical Treatment:
* Ciprofloxacin, oral for 4- 6 weeks, 500 mg 12 hours.

When to refer :* For necrotic bone surgical debridging in non- respondents.
* All cases at a center where the affected area can be scanned by CT to evaluate the extent of the disease.
Nervous cranial paralysis.
