Medical Treatment:
- Usually, a labial fusion or adhesion separates without treatment naturally
- Treatment is not needed for labial fusion unless there are other symptoms, such as dribbling after urination, that may cause problems or discomfort
- Labial fusion is treated with oestrogen cream or ointment applied daily or, very rarely, surgical separation (very rarely needed to treat labial fusion)
- Oestrogen creams and ointments are cause some side effects, especially if used for long periods than a few weeks. For more than six weeks, they should not be used
- Skin darkening in the genital area
- Irritation around the genital area
- After you stop using the cream or ointment, vaginal spotting or bleeding
Surgery may be considered if:
- A fusion is particularly thick and severe
- There is trapped urine in the vagina, that may dribble out after urination and cause vulval soreness
- Oestrogen cream or ointment does not work
