Overview

Commencing with the Sisters of Providence introducing healthcare to Nome in 1902 during the Gold Rush era, a rich history of serving Alaska was established. This pioneering spirit set the benchmark for contemporary healthcare in Alaska and laid the groundwork for Providence's evolution as the foremost healthcare provider in the state. They provide services to residents of six Alaskan communities, namely Anchorage, Eagle River, Kodiak Island, Mat-Su, Seward, and Valdez, and are Alaska's largest private employer with over 4,000 full and part-time employees statewide.

Providence achieved recognition in the U.S. News & World Report 2023-24 Best Hospital rankings, designating Providence Alaska Medical Center as Anchorage's premier hospital, with high performance in seven procedures and conditions: Back Surgery (Spinal Fusion), COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), Heart Attack, Heart Failure, Hip Fracture, Kidney Failure, and Stroke.

    I recently had a fall and ended up in the emergency room for the first time. I was seen very quickly and Dr.Madden and the nurses were amazing. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience and I am so grateful for Dr. Madden.

    I checked into Imaging for a mammogram with Moriah. She was amazing. Two other employees consulted her while she was signing me in. She quickly answered their questions and never paused working with me. Quite the multitasker indeed. Not only so knowledgeable that other employees rely on her expertise, Moriah is also competent and efficient. Great customer service!

    I came here after a sudden knot appeared on my jaw. This place has the most caring people, from doctors, nurses, and techs to the kitchen staff and housekeeping. I felt my care was given priority and everything was explained well. As a person who has been to bad hospitals, I can actually recommend this one.

    During a trip to Alaska, I ended up at Providence Alaska Medical Center after becoming quite ill. I was nervous being so sick while extremely far away from home. I went through the ER, but didn't wait long at all. The staff was wonderful, calming, and understanding. The doctor was very thorough in making sure nothing was missed, ran all the appropriate tests, and diagnosed me accordingly. I was concerned about a prescription I was given, so the doctor (Matthew Madden), and later my nurse (David from Atlanta), went over all the side effects and literature. The entire staff took their time explaining things and making sure I felt comfortable. I highly recommend this hospital.

    As far as hospitals go providence is by far the best in Anchorage and probably the state. The nurses are absolutely amazing. I've never ever felt out of place as a visitor to a patient and never felt like a burden or the patient was a burden. They do amazing things here at providence
