Overview

The London Ambulance Service NHS, as the mobile arm of the health service in London, is dedicated to responding promptly to emergency 999 calls. Their primary objective is to deliver swift medical assistance to individuals facing serious or life-threatening injuries or illnesses. Despite the urgency of their response, a significant portion of their cases involves patients without critical conditions, obviating the need for ambulance transport with lights and sirens. Many of these individuals can benefit from more suitable care outside the traditional hospital setting. Integral to their operations is a steadfast commitment to infection prevention and control, with all staff members, particularly those directly engaged with patients, playing a crucial role in maintaining a clean and hygienic treatment environment.

In addition to emergency response, they manage the Emergency Bed Service, a vital system facilitating bed arrangements for seriously-ill patients through collaboration with NHS healthcare professionals. Operating as an emergency service in the capital, they prioritize preparedness for large-scale incidents. During major incidents, the London Ambulance Service collaborates closely with other emergency services and organizations in the city to effectively save lives. Their responsibilities span alerting hospitals, establishing on-scene systems for prioritizing and treating patients, providing initial care and stabilization for the injured, and transporting patients requiring further treatment to hospitals. Regular testing of their major incident plan, often in coordination with other agencies, ensures their ongoing readiness. Outlined in the Major Incident Procedure Manual by the London Emergency Services Liaison Panel, the roles of each emergency service during major incidents and the support provided by local authorities are clearly defined.

On the 25/10/21, can't remember the exact time, seeing the ambulance crew walked in was like angels who was sent in desperate need. I just want to thank them for saving my life the young woman and man I am very grateful for their wise decision, if not I don't know what should have happened. I would have loved to add your names but unfortunately I can't remember your names. Thanks for kindness, reassurance, empathy, compassion and highly professional. I am back home now to meet my children. If you came around Stratford this date is for you. We need more life savers like you.

Super-fast, warm and professional care from the paramedics who collected my father-in-law after we thought he'd had a stroke. The thoughtful, kind and personable duo who came to our aid even returned to resus at The Royal London hospital in Whitechapel later in the day to check on my father-in-law's progress. Really outstanding service, thank you so much
