Overview

Dr. John Berry White, a British Surgeon of the East India Company, played a crucial role in establishing health education and healthcare in Assam by founding the Berry White Medical School in Dibrugarh in 1898-99. This institution later evolved into the Assam Medical College, officially opened on November 3, 1947, as the first medical college in Assam. Recognizing the growing need for medical education, the Assam government initiated the establishment of a second medical college, leading to the creation of Gauhati Medical College in Guwahati on September 20, 1960.

Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) has expanded its facilities and services significantly over the years. Inaugurated in 1968, GMCH features advanced medical technology, including a State Cancer Institute established in 2017 and a fully operational Super Specialty Hospital since January 2021. With 33 departments, including 12 super-specialty divisions, GMCH accommodates 200 undergraduate and 210 postgraduate students annually. The institution emphasizes teaching and research across 35 disciplines and offers nursing programs for B.Sc and M.Sc degrees. Over its more than 60 years of existence, GMCH has produced numerous healthcare professionals who have made significant contributions to medical services both nationally and internationally.
