Overview

Government Doon Medical College Hospital began as a dispensary under Dehradun Municipality in 1854, admitting patients in 1860 and performing surgical operations by 1910. At that time, Dehradun had a population of just 19,000. In 1925, Colonel C.H. Barber was appointed as the first Civil Surgeon, leading efforts to expand the dispensary into a full hospital. By January 24, 1932, the construction of a new hospital building was approved, initially providing 75 beds—57 general and 18 private.

Recently, the old Doon Hospital operated as a 252-bed facility, with 232 beds for general patients and 20 for eye patients. On December 23, 2015, it was transferred and upgraded under the Department of Medical Education, Uttarakhand. The government is committed to establishing this hospital as a premier healthcare center in the region, with plans to increase bed capacity to 750 and introduce super specialties such as Neuro and Plastic Surgery. Continuous upgrades in medical services, equipment, and infrastructure are being implemented with faculty recruited from across the country.
