In 1978, an organization was established in Wakeman, Ohio, in response to the recognized need and community desire for a locally-based ambulance service to meet the emergency medical service requirements of the surrounding areas. Citizens Ambulance functions as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation, with oversight provided by a volunteer Board of Directors consisting of representatives from the different local political subdivisions. This arrangement guarantees that the ambulance service is subject to local community control and supervision. When they initially began, Citizens Ambulance depended on volunteer EMTs to operate a Basic Life Support ambulance.
Today, they have advanced to offering Advanced Life Support, with paramedics and EMTs accessible 24/7, seven days a week, at their Wakeman station.
