Overview

Founded in 1948, they function as a representative entity for both emergency and non-emergency ambulance service providers that operate in nearly every county in California. Serving as the primary healthcare first responders, the Association is dedicated to guaranteeing the delivery of high-quality pre-hospital care to the residents of California by advocating for well-established industry best practices. Looking at the California Ambulance Industry from a quantitative standpoint, there are 715 ambulance services in total, encompassing both public and private entities throughout the entire state.

Among these services, 170 belong to the private sector, with a combined total of 3,600 licensed ambulances. The day-to-day management of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) system is the responsibility of each county. Each county designates a local EMS agency (LEMSA), which can be either an agency established and operated by the county itself or an entity contracted by the county for EMS administration. Currently, California has 33 LEMSAs, consisting of seven multi-county LEMSAs and 26 single-county LEMSAs.
