Who is a Thoracic Surgeon?
A thoracic surgeon is a medical doctor who specializes in surgical procedures related to the chest, including the lungs, esophagus, diaphragm, heart, and other organs in the thoracic cavity.
Thoracic surgeons diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions and diseases, including lung cancer, esophageal cancer, emphysema, pulmonary fibrosis, pleural effusion, hiatal hernia, chest trauma, and more. They use a variety of surgical techniques, including minimally invasive procedures, to address these conditions and improve patient outcomes.
Thoracic surgeons typically complete a general surgery residency followed by a fellowship in thoracic surgery, which involves several additional years of training in the diagnosis and treatment of thoracic conditions. They may work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, academic medical centers, and private practices.
