What Is a Radiation Oncologist?
A Radiation Oncologist is a medical doctor who specializes in the use of radiation therapy to treat cancer. They work with a team of healthcare professionals to develop and implement treatment plans for patients with cancer.
Radiation Oncologists use radiation therapy to target and destroy cancer cells while minimizing damage to healthy cells. They use advanced imaging techniques to identify the location and size of tumors, and then develop a customized treatment plan based on the type and stage of cancer, as well as the patient's overall health.
Radiation therapy may be delivered externally, using a machine that directs high-energy beams of radiation at the tumor from outside the body, or internally, by placing radioactive materials directly into or near the tumor. The Radiation Oncologist works closely with medical physicists, dosimetrists, and radiation therapists to ensure that the radiation therapy is delivered safely and effectively.
In addition to treating cancer, Radiation Oncologists also provide supportive care to manage the side effects of radiation therapy, such as skin irritation, fatigue, and nausea. They also work closely with other healthcare professionals, such as medical oncologists, surgeons, and nurses, to provide comprehensive care to patients with cancer.
