Who is a Periodontist and what do they need ?

A periodontist is a dental specialist who is trained to prevent, diagnose, and treat periodontal disease, which is an inflammatory disease that affects the supporting structures of the teeth, including the gums, bone, and ligaments.

Periodontists receive an additional three years of specialized training beyond dental school, during which they gain expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease and other conditions affecting the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. Some of the procedures that periodontists may perform include:

  1. Scaling and Root Planing: A non-surgical procedure in which the periodontist removes plaque and calculus from the surface of the teeth and roots.

  2. Periodontal Surgery: Periodontists may perform a variety of surgical procedures to treat gum disease, including flap surgery, gum grafts, and bone grafts.

  3. Dental Implants: Periodontists may place dental implants, which are artificial tooth roots that are used to support replacement teeth.

  4. Gum Reshaping: Periodontists may perform gum reshaping procedures to improve the appearance of the gum line.

  5. Biopsy: Periodontists may perform a biopsy to diagnose oral pathology, such as oral cancer.

Periodontists need specialized training in the diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease, as well as knowledge of the latest techniques and technologies used in periodontal treatment. They also need excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as they often work closely with other dental and healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care to their patients. Additionally, periodontists need to be detail-oriented and have excellent hand-eye coordination, as many of the procedures they perform require a high degree of precision.
