A Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) is a healthcare professional who performs laboratory tests and procedures to help diagnose and treat diseases. They work under the supervision of a medical laboratory technologist, pathologist or physician.
MLTs collect and process samples of blood, urine, tissue, and other body fluids for analysis. They perform tests such as hematology, microbiology, immunology, clinical chemistry, and blood banking to help detect and diagnose diseases. They also maintain and operate laboratory equipment, and ensure that all procedures are conducted in a safe and efficient manner.
Medical Laboratory Technicians must follow strict guidelines to ensure the accuracy of test results, maintain laboratory records, and communicate test results to physicians and other healthcare professionals. They may also be involved in research, quality control, and teaching.
To become a Medical Laboratory Technician, one must typically have an associate degree in medical laboratory technology or a related field, and must pass a national certification exam. MLTs can work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics, research laboratories, and diagnostic laboratories. They play a critical role in helping healthcare professionals diagnose and treat patients.
