I graduated from Sofia Medical University in Bulgaria in 1985 and later completed a residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the University of Rochester Medical Center in 1996. My training in Dermatopathology was under the mentorship of one of the world’s best dermatopathologists, Dr. A. Bernard Ackerman, at the Institute for Dermatopathology at Thomas Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. This training laid the foundation for my extensive career in the field.
For almost two decades, I served at Yale University School of Medicine, where I worked and taught in the Department of Dermatology. I also led the Yale Dermatopathology Fellowship Program for 14 years, making it one of the best programs of its kind in the world. I have mentored over fifty physicians from twenty-six countries and have had the privilege of educating many professionals globally.
Currently, I serve as the Medical Director at Arizona Dermatopathology, where I continue my work in advancing dermatopathological practices. I have co-authored two textbooks and published over 100 papers. My primary area of research is melanocytic lesions, especially Spitzoid neoplasms. I also pioneered the Yale Spitzoid Biospecimen and Data Repository and am currently involved in groundbreaking research applying mass spectrometry in dermatopathology.
Throughout my career, I have held many leadership roles in esteemed societies such as the American Society of Dermatopathology and the International Society of Dermatopathology, and have had the opportunity to teach and direct numerous courses and sessions at national and international conferences.
