How to Treat Ichthyosis?

Medical Treatment:
  • No cure for ichthyosis
  • Exfoliating and moisturizing the skin daily can help to avoid dryness, scaling and the build-up of skin cells
  • Appropriate moisturizing treatments can be prescribed by your skin specialist, in the form of a cream, ointment, lotion or bath oil
  • Apply emollients to wet skin to trap the moisture
  • Gently rub wet skin with a pumice stone to remove some of the thickened skin
  • Brush washed hair to remove scales from your scalp
  • Steroid treatments are not effective for treating ichthyosis
  • Antiseptics or antibiotics may be prescribed to treat skin infections
Severe ichthyosis
  • People with severe ichthyosis may need to take care of their skin for several hours a day
  • Retinoid tablets (synthetic vitamin A) may be prescribed for people with severe ichthyosis, that reduce the growth of overactive scaly skin. They improve the appearance of the skin, but they do not improve the inflammation or redness
  • Supplements of vitamin D may also be prescribed
