How to Treat Aspiration Pneumonia?

Medical Treatment:
Antimicrobial therapy
Continue therapy until sepsis has no characteristics.

• Penicillin G, IV, 2 million units 6 hours a day.

PLUS

• Oral, metronidazole 400 mg 8 hours per hour.

If you live with nosocomial infection or nursing home:
ADD

• Amikacin 15 mg / kg five days daily.

Follow with:

• Amoxicillin, oral, 500 mg 8 hours.

PLUS

• Oral, metronidazole 400 mg 8 hours per hour.

Penicillin allergy:

• Clindamycin IV, 600 mg 8 hours per hour.

When to refer:

• Facemask oxygen non- responsive hypoxaemia.
• Suspected aspiration of a foreign body.
• Suspected pneumonia of chemical aspiration.
• Unresolved pneumonia.
