Dr. Leyland joined McMaster University as Professor and Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology from the University of Toronto in January 2011. In Toronto he was an Associate Professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Chief, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and the Medical Director of the Women’s, Children’s and Family Health Program at St. Joseph’s Health Centre in Toronto. Dr. Leyland received his Bachelor of Applied Science degree from the University of Guelph (1979) and his MD from the University of Toronto where he graduated as a Cody Silver Medalist (1983). In 2006, Dr. Leyland received a Master of Science in Health Care Management from Harvard University. His thesis was the development of Canadian ambulatory care centres for the provision of medical and minimally invasive surgical approaches to common gynaecological problems. Dr. Leyland is a nationally recognized leader in women’s health and gynaecological surgery. He has advocated for and contributed academically to the advancement of women’s health in the development and the provision of the least invasive surgical options for a variety of surgical conditions. He is an award winning teacher and researcher and sought after speaker on a variety of issues in women’s health, patient safety and quality in medicine. He has developed many innovative laparoscopic techniques including an operation to correct cervical incompetence in pregnant patients (an operation that he has trained surgeons to perform across Canada and in many other countries). He is the has been the Chair of the Gynaecology Clinical Practice Committee of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada, helping to set standards for the profession and is a past President of the Society of Minimally Invasive Gynaecologists of Canada. The much of his academic career has been at the University of Toronto where he and his colleagues developed one of Canada’s first comprehensive fellowships in minimally invasive gynaecological surgery.
